Sustainable Hemp Clothing: From Seed to Wardrobe
Why we choose hemp
From the very beginning, we at Jheronimus Clothing have had a clear ambition:
to make clothing from seed to wardrobe, as locally and responsibly as possible – preferably on Dutch soil.
With memories of hemp cultivated in Brabant villages, one raw material quickly emerged as the top contender: hemp. Not as a hype, but as a historical crop, a future-proof fiber, and a logical building block for a fair textile chain.
Hemp grows as nature intended
Hemp is not a demanding plant. On the contrary, it grows everywhere.
-
🌱 Grows rapidly – often ready for harvest within 100 to 120 days
-
🌱 Requires few to no pesticides – naturally strong and resistant
-
🌱 Grows like a weed – suppresses other plants and requires little intervention
This makes hemp extremely suitable for organic cultivation, without artificial aids that harm soil, water, and biodiversity.
circular and sustainable production
CO₂ absorption and storage in hemp clothing
What makes hemp extra special is what you don't see.
-
🌍 During its rapid growth, hemp absorbs large quantities of CO₂ from the atmosphere
-
🌍 A portion of this carbon is stored in its fibers
-
🌍 When processed into textile, this CO₂ remains stored in the garment for years
Our Bermuda shorts and shirts thus function as a form of temporary carbon storage. As long as the garment is worn, that sequestered CO₂ remains out of the air. This makes durability not a detail, but an essential part of the impact.
Soil restoration and fertile agricultural land
Hemp not only contributes to cleaner air but also to healthier soil.
-
🌱 Deep root structures loosen and aerate the soil
-
🌱 Improve water management and prevent leaching
-
🌱 Plant residues return organic matter to the soil
In agriculture, hemp is therefore increasingly used as a soil-restoring crop within crop rotation. Depleted soil regains structure, life, and nutritional value.
In other words: hemp doesn't just take, it gives back.
From Dutch field to Bermuda shorts & shirt
Hemp was cultivated in the Netherlands for centuries – for ropes, sails, and workwear. Much of that knowledge has been lost, but the potential is still there.
That's precisely why hemp fits so well with our original mission.
Not because it's the easiest path, but because it's the most logical.
If you truly want to think locally and circularly, you start with a crop that can grow here, be processed here, and be worn here.
Our hemp Bermuda shorts and shirts are therefore not just a piece of clothing, but also a story of origin.
The benefits of wearing hemp
Strong, breathable, and made for living
Besides the impact on land and air, how a fabric wears also counts, of course.
Hemp fibers have unique properties:
-
👕 Very strong and durable – designed for longevity
-
🌬️ Breathable and temperature-regulating – cool in summer, comfortable all year round
-
🧺 Softens after every wash – without losing its character
For our Bermuda shorts, that means: robust, comfortable, and wonderful for summer.
For our shirts: airy, distinctive, and timeless.
Old fiber, new future
Hemp is far from new. But in an industry that has too long focused on rapid growth and cheap solutions, it feels almost revolutionary to revert to what always worked.
For us, hemp is not a trend, but a foundation.
A fabric that aligns with our values, our environment, and our long-term vision.
From seed…
to Bermuda shorts.
To shirt.
To wardrobe.
And that's where the real impact begins.
